Calhoun man assaults Gordon County deputy during DUI arrest after 911 call concerned citizen

According to a Gordon County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On Saturday, December 10th, 2022, at 6:51 PM, Deputy Shipman was in the area of Red Bud Road and Curtis Pkwy when Gordon E911 gave a lookout for a possible drunk driver traveling north on Curtis Pkwy. Deputy Shipman observed a gray in color Kia Optima traveling north, unable to maintain its lane. Deputy Shipman then attempted a traffic stop. The driver of the Kia Optima, later identified as Juan Jose Chanchavac, 28, of Calhoun, did not immediately stop and continued driving almost to the dead end of Holly Dr. before turning and attempting to park the vehicle in a parking spot. According to the report, Before Deputy Shipman could exit his patrol car, Mr. Chanchavac exited his vehicle and was unsteady while standing. When Deputy Shipman approached Mr. Chanchavac, Deputy Shipman immediately smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Mr. Chanchavac’s breath. Deputy Shipman gave Mr. Chanchavac several commands to place his hands on the vehicle, and he was unable to follow those simple instructions due to his level of intoxication.” Chanchavac stated he had only had one beer before. Chanchavac then became extremely angry and began yelling in Spanish. While walking back to the patrol car, Chanchavac stumbled several feet to the right of the patrol car. Chanchavac’s eyes were bloodshot and very watery. Chanchavac refused the field sobriety test. Chanchavac was placed under arrest for DUI, and he refused the state test. Chanchavac then began resisting arrest, fighting with the deputy in an attempt to exit the patrol car. According to the report, “During the altercation, Chanchavac violently kicked Deputy Shipman causing Deputy Shipman to strike his head on the patrol car partition causing Deputy Shipman’s head to bleed and swell. Chanchavac was then transported to the Gordon County Jail and charged with obstruction, DUI, and failure to maintain a single lane.
