Summerville man arrested for DUI and reckless driving after crash on Mahan Road in Chattooga County

According to a Georgia State Patrol incident report, On May 12th, 2023, at 6:55 PM, Corporal Flowers was dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on Mahan Road in Chattooga County. During the crash investigation, it was determined that the 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis was being driven by William Benjamin Greer, 27, of Summerville, with a female passenger. According to the report, “Greer was driving north on Mahan Road at a high rate of speed. Greer quickly braked, which caused the vehicle to rotate in a clockwise direction. The vehicle exited the left side of the roadway and struck a barbed wire fence with its front. The vehicle continued along the fence line and struck a tree with its right front bumper. The impact with the tree caused The vehicle to rotate counterclockwise, facing west in a field. The passenger who left the scene originally stated she was riding with Greer and realized he had been drinking. She stated they were arguing, and then he started speeding down the roadway before he lost control of the vehicle.” The trooper spoke to Greer about the crash, and he stated he had been working on the brakes, and while traveling down the roadway, the brakes locked up, and he lost control of the vehicle. Corporal Flowers reported, “While talking to Mr. Greer, [I] noticed an extremely strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. His speech was extremely slurred and mumbled. His eyes were bloodshot and watery. [I] asked him if he had anything to drink, and he stated no. He gave me a sample of his breath on the PBT, which tested positive for an alcoholic beverage (.327).” During field sobriety testing, Greer showed several signs of impairment. Greer was placed under arrest for DUI and agreed to the state test. Greer was booked into the Chattooga County Jail and charged with DUI, reckless driving, and failing to maintain a single lane.
