According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report, On Tuesday, February 8th, 2024, at around 10:17 AM, a 2019 Ford Fiesta being driven by Dustin Smith, 35, of Summerville, was traveling north in the left turning lane of GA-1 attempting to turn left onto GA 151 Spur Road near the Dollar General. A 2023 Chevrolet Equinox, being driven by Kathryn Fox, 53, of Chickamauga, was traveling south on GA-1 in the right lane. According to the report, “Dustin turned left in front of the Equinox. The Equinox struck the passenger side of the Fiesta with its front. The area of impact was in the right lane of GA-1 South at the intersection of GA 151 Spur Road. After impact, the Fiesta rotated clockwise and came to an uncontrolled final rest in the westbound lane of GA 151 Spur Road facing north. The Equinox continued south and rotated clockwise, leaving the right shoulder of GA 1 south facing east.” According to the report, GSP Troop A SCRT was contacted and responded to the scene. Danny Smith, 72, of Trion, was a front seat passenger in the Fiesta and was pronounced deceased on scene. Dustin was seriously injured in the crash and was transported by Life Force to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. Kathryn was also injured and transported by CHI EMS.
