Huntsville woman arrested for DUI after driving 90 mph with unrestrained toddler on Hwy 27

According to a Georgia State Patrol incident report, On June 18th, 2023, at 10:54 AM, Corporal Flowers was patrolling on GA-1 near Farmersville Road in Chattooga County. Corporal Flowers reported, “[I] noticed a silver 2009 Mazda passenger vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. [I] used my state-issued radar and checked tie vehicle speed at 86 mph in a 65 mph zone. [I] turned around and attempted to catch up with the vehicle. [I] noticed the sliver Mazda increased its speed and checked the vehicle at 90 mph.” The trooper conducted a traffic stop and made contact with Jayla Amir Mitchell, 20, of Huntsville. Mitchell was asked why she was speeding, and she stated she didn’t realize she was traveling that fast. While talking to her, the trooper noticed a 1-year-old child in the rear seat that was not buckled in at all. The trooper also noticed an extremely strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from within the vehicle. Mitchell was observed to have bloodshot watery eyes, and pupils were dilated, and eyelid tremors. Mitchell advised she smoked marijuana before they left Atlanta and was just trying to get home in Huntsville, Al. During field sobriety testing, Mitchell showed several signs of impairment. Mitchell refused the state test. Mitchell was booked into the Chattooga County Jail, and charged with DUI, DUI child endangerment, speeding, reckless driving, improper stopping, and child safety restraints.
