Chattanooga man arrested after pursuit of stolen vehicle ends with PIT maneuver on I-75 in Catoosa

According to Tunnel Hill PD, Sgt. Witt on Monday, July 6th, 2020, he observed the stolen Chevrolet Cruze on Highway 41 near Old Chattanooga Road. Sgt. Witt advised he caught back up to it at the interstate, and they headed north on 75. According to GSP Lt. Stallings at approximately 8:30 p.m., TFC Cantrell attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the stolen Chevrolet Cruze on I-75 North in the area of mile marker 339 after being notified by the mounted License Plate Readers (LPRs) located at the weigh station. The driver of the vehicle initiated a pursuit on I-75. Sgt. Witt advised the stolen Cruze was clocked going between 115 and 125MPH during the pursuit. TFC Cantrell performed a successful PIT maneuver on the fleeing vehicle at mile marker 344. The vehicle rotated in a clockwise direction struck the guardrail and traveled back onto the interstate, striking the front passenger door of TFC Cantrell's patrol vehicle. After the Chevrolet Cruze struck TFC Cantrell's patrol vehicle, both vehicles came to a final rest in the center median of I-75 North. As a result of the pursuit, a stolen vehicle was recovered. One passenger was transported to Erlanger Main for possible broken bones and skull fracture. Another passenger was transported to the hospital after she started to complain of pelvic pain. The driver Nicholas P. Merrill, 27 of Chattanooga, refused medical treatment. TFC Cantrell did not sustain any injuries. SCRT A also responded to the scene. Merrill was booked in on Charges of felony fleeing, a felony charge for altering the serial number of a firearm, felony theft by receiving a stolen vehicle, felony serious injury by vehicle, DUI, and several other pursuit related misdemeanor charges.
