Chatsworth man charged with DUI after crashing into rear of Jeep at intersection in Dalton
According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, on March 12th, 2020, at 6:22 AM, an officer was dispatched to Chattanooga Road at Shugart Road, in reference to a vehicle crash. The officer arrived and learned that Brandon Richard Smith, 43, of Chatsworth, vehicle had rear-ended a Jeep. The officer asked both involved if they needed medical attention, where they denied EMS. While the officer gathered information, he observed unusual behavior from Brandon. Brandon had a hard time giving the officers answers to simple questions. The officer asked both drivers to move the vehicles to the Mapco parking lot to clear the roadway. When Brandon got into his vehicle, he hit the gas in order to accelerate with his vehicle but it was still in park. It took him a few seconds of trying to accelerating before he realized this. He finally put the vehicle into drive and moved to the location that the officer instructed. The officer continued with his crash investigation and noticed Brandon's speech was slurred. The officer had a difficult time understanding him due to his severe slurred speech. Brandon also had a difficult time maintaining his balance. Brandon claimed that he had not been drinking or taking any drugs and that he had been asleep at his home and was woken up early. Brandon stated to the officer that he was on his way to work. Another who performed field sobriety test advised that Brandon blew 000 on Alco-Sensor but that his field sobriety indicated that he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Brandon under arrested for DUI less safe. A search of Brandon lead to the discovery of a bottle of Dramamine. Brandon advised that he consented to a blood test and was transported to Hamilton Medical Center for a test of his blood. Brandon stated that he had taken Xanax the night before. He was transported to the Whitfield County Jail charged with DUI less safe and following too closely. According to arrest records Brandon has been arrested before for DUI.
