Intoxicated Rockmart man arrested after shooting at woman inside vehicle in Floyd County

According to a Floyd County Police Department incident report, On June 30th, 2023, at 4:37 PM, Lt Hovers, Sgt Tetstworth and Officer Bradley responded to 77 Smith Road in regard to a fight. The caller informed dispatch that the aggressor in the call James Terrence Smith, 34, of Rockmart was still on scene under the influence of alcohol and had shot her vehicle. Officers arrived on scene and took Smith at gunpoint and into custody. Officer Bradley reported, “Smith was searched, and the firearm removed from his right pocket. Smith informed Sgt. Tetsworth and myself that he had a little to drink but he has not done anything. While Sgt Tetsworth continued to talk to Smith [I] began looking for evidence of the crime. [I] found the round that hit the vehicle laying beside the left rear driver tire of the vehicle. The bullet hole was located above the rear left tire on the back quarter panel. I found the spent brass located in the grass beside the vehicle that was shot.” The victim informed officers that she was scared for her life given his conduct, and the danger of him shooting her, her gas tank, or if her kids had been with her. The neighbors across the street heard and witnessed the entire incident take place. The witnesses observed the victim trying to leave and Smith was trying to get in the car. When the victim would not let Smith in the vehicle he shot the vehicle.  Smith was transported to the Floyd County Jail and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless conduct, discharging a firearm near a street, discharging a firearm under the influence of alcohol and criminal trespass.
