Calhoun man arrested on felony aggravated cruelty charge after horrific scene in Gordon County

According to a Gordon County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On Thursday, November 26, 2023, at 4:02 PM, Deputy Jinwright was dispatched to 566 Erwin Road in reference to a meeting with Gordon County Animal Control in reference to an animal abuse report. Deputy Jinwright met with Gordon County Animal Control Officer Beavers, who advised that she was following up on a complaint when she encountered an extremely terrible sight. The animal control officer advised the deputy there were seven puppies total that were all malnourished, and one pen of the puppies had a half-eaten puppy carcass where the others had eaten it due to extreme starvation. Deputy Jinwright called Sergeant Anderson, who contacted an investigator. Deputies learned that Travis Gene Stansell, 54, of Calhoun, was the owner. The deputies also learned that the house had no water on the residence and had not had any for three years. Stansell was also found to have two juvenile children who lived with him. Deputies also completed a DFCS referral due to the residence not having running water and working restroom facilities. Stansell was eventually arrested and booked into the Gordon County Jail, charged with felony aggravated cruelty.
