Woman wanted for probation violation arrested after shoplifting over $500 from Dalton Walmart

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On May 22nd, 2023, Officer Hill, along with Officer Kell, responded to the Walmart at 815 Shugart Rd in reference to a shoplifting in progress. The caller Walmart asset protection employee advised dispatch that a female was shoplifting. The employee showed a video showing the female placing a barcode from another item over the barcode on the items in the buggy. The female had done this with several items, according to the employee. According to the report, “The female continued to walk throughout the store and down the clearance aisle and floral/fabric aisle, possibly where she obtained the cheaper barcodes/tags. The female then walked to the garden center, walked around, and then went back into the store. The female then went to a self-checkout on the west side of the store. She scanned her phone to pay with the Walmart mobile app. The female, using the app, then paid for an item worth $0.93. The female then scanned a bottle of juice and paid for it using a debit/credit card. After paying for these two items (less than $4.00 worth), the female then took her buggy and walked outside the store past the last point of sale.” While in the parking lot, walking towards some vehicles, Officer Kell and Officer Hill stopped the female, later identified as Hydy Lynn Barrett, 30, of Chatsworth. Barrett then began to act squirmish and acting as if she was going to attempt to flee. Officer Kell then placed her into handcuffs to prevent her from fleeing. Barrett tensed up and made it difficult to be handcuffed. She kept saying that she wanted to call her boyfriend first. Barrett kept saying that she wanted to call a detective in Murray County and wanted to call her lawyer. She would not answer any of the questions related to the shoplifting. She freely uttered that she did it because she was scared for her life and that her boyfriend made her do it or he would kill her. Hydy appeared to be slightly intoxicated based on the smell of alcohol coming from her person. She stated that she had one shot of an alcoholic beverage to drink prior to coming to Walmart to shoplift. The total value of everything stolen was $535.80. While being searched, it was discovered that Barrett had put on a pair of pants belonging to Walmart under her pants. The value of these pants was $12.98. Barrett had since urinated on those pants while in the store. This brought the total value of everything stolen up to $548.78. It was also discovered that Barrett had a felony probation violation warrant through Gordon County. Barrett was then transported to the Whitfield County Jail and booked.
