Woman shot after assaulting Dalton officer in attack at Hamilton Medical Emergency Room Center

Dalton, GA (May 1, 2023) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Dalton, GA. The Dalton Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on May 1, 2023. One woman was shot, and one Dalton Police Department officer was injured during the incident.

The preliminary information indicates that on May 1, 2023, around 4:45 a.m., Dalton Police Department Officers were dispatched to the Hamilton Medical Emergency Room Center lobby in response to a person, later identified as Chevona Bernice Doughty, 41, of Dalton, barricaded in one of the examination rooms. When the officers entered the room, Doughty threw an unknown chemical liquid substance into one of the officer’s eyes, causing the officer to temporarily lose his sight. The officer fired his weapon shooting Doughty. Doughty received non-life-threatening injuries. Doughty was treated and released into the custody of the Dalton Police Department. The officer received treatment for his eyes and was released from the hospital. The liquid substance was later determined to be hand sanitizer. Dalton PD arrested and charged Doughty with the offenses of Aggravated Battery-Officer, Obstruction of Officer, and Criminal Damage.

The GBI will complete an independent investigation. Once complete, the case will be given to the Whitfield County District Attorney’s Office for review.

GBI Investigating Dalton Officer-Involved Shooting:

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested by the Dalton Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting that happened in the early morning hours of Monday, May 1st. The offender received a gunshot wound that is not considered life-threatening and the officer received an injury to their eyes which is also not considered life-threatening.

Preliminary information from the investigation indicates that Dalton Police Department officers were dispatched to the Hamilton Medical Center’s Emergency Department in reference to a suspect who had barricaded herself into a patient room and was damaging equipment and was resisting efforts by hospital staff to help her. When officers arrived, they encountered the hostile subject and attempted to take her into custody. In that process, the officer received injuries to his eyes and the officer discharged his weapon and struck the suspect. The suspect was treated for the gunshot wound and will recover. The suspect is in the process of being released to custody. The officer was treated for his injuries.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has responded and will be investigating this incident. All inquiries should be directed to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for comment.
