Wanted fugitive loitering at park found with meth after attempting to flee on bicycle from Dalton officers

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, on May 1st, 2023, at 11:19 PM, Officer Shope and Officer Womack were patrolling the area of Lake Street and 4th Avenue near the 4th Ave Recreational Park. Officers noticed several subjects standing around a table underneath an awning at the 4th Ave Park, which was closed due to the time of night. A black male, later identified as Eddie Paul McCurdy, 44, of Chattanooga, TN, saw the officers approaching and got on his bicycle, quickly peddling away. McCurdy refused verbal commands to stop. Officer Womack ran after him on foot while Officer Shope pursued him in his patrol vehicle. Officer Shope eventually caught McCurdy near Kenner Street and Strain Street. Officer Shope advised he saw McCurdy holding something in his left hand as he was peddling away from him. Officer Shope stated he threw something down as he crashed his bike near the area he was detained. Officers searched the area and found a small flashlight-like container near the bike, socks, and shoes belonging to McCurdy. Inside the container was a baggie of meth. McCurdy stated the reason he ran is he was scared because he has had bad experiences with police. Officers also located marijuana on McCurdy. After running McCurdy’s information they learned he had a felony warrant out of Bradley County, Tennessee. McCurdy was booked into the Whitfield County Jail, charged with possession of meth, obstruction of law enforcement, loitering, and fugitive from justice.
