Rome mother arrested for DUI after attempting to pick up 6-year-old daughter from Model Elementary

According to a Floyd County Police Department incident, On May 15th, 2023, at 4:34 PM, Officer Sangphim and Officer Corbin were dispatched to Model Elementary School at 3200 Calhoun Road in reference to a complainant advising that one of the mothers that came to pick up their daughter after school was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The complainant was the principal and other staff members. The staff explained that the 6-year-old daughter was on the school bus to go home. However, no one was at the residence to receive her getting off the bus, so the bus took her back to Model Elementary School for after-school care due to school policy. Officer Corbin reported, “When the mother, Celena Michelle Brooks, 29, of Rome, came to the school to pick up her daughter, school staff stated that Brooks was “picking at herself” and acting very strange, possibly on drugs. Another staff member explained that this was the first time they had seen the mother and advised that there had been previous attendance issues with the 6-year-old. Celena Brooks was waiting by her car in the car-rider zone, and Officer Sangphim went to speak with her. After running her driver’s license through dispatch, dispatch informed us that Brooks’ license was suspended. Celena Brooks agreed to perform roadside evaluations, administered by Officer Sangphim. After roadside evaluations, Officer Sangphim determined that given her performance, she was under the influence to the extent that it was less safe for her to drive.” Officers discovered two empty bottles of prescribed Methadone. Brooks was read Georgia Implied-Consent for her blood, which she agreed to. Brooks was transported to the Floyd County Jail, where she was charged with DUI driving under the influence of prescription medication and driving while license suspended.
