Rossville man arrested for DUI after crashing into ditch on Lakeview Drive in Catoosa County

According to a Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On July 18th, 2023, at 3:19 hours, Deputy Henry was traveling east on Lakeview Drive when he noticed a red 2012 Toyato sitting in a ditch just east of Rosa Street. The driver, later identified as Matthew R Lewis, 27, of Rossville, stated that he was going home and stated that he had missed his road and managed to veer off of the roadway. According to the report, “While speaking with Lewis, Deputy Henry could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Lewis’s breath and also noticed that he was using his vehicle for balance. Deputy Henry asked Lewis if he had consumed any alcoholic beverages before driving, and he stated that he only had five or six beers at Sparetime, located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Deputy Henry also observed Lewis had red and watery eyes and that he was still uneasy on his feet.” During field sobriety testing, Lewis showed several signs of impairment. Based on the observations, Deputy Henry went to place Lewis under arrest for DUI. Lewis pulled away from Deputy Henry and obstructed the deputy. Deputy Powell assisted in getting Lewis into handcuffs. Lewis kept trying to pull away from deputies before finally being placed into handcuffs. Lewis refused the state test and was booked into the Catoosa County Jail, charged with DUI, obstruction, and failure to maintain a single lane.
