Rock Spring man overdoses behind the wheel with kid, revived with Narcan in Whitfield County

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On June 30th, 2023, at approximately 8:07 PM, Deputy Dennison, along with Sgt. Buchanan was dispatched to Lafayette Road and Chattanooga Road in reference to the subject passed out in the driver seat of his vehicle at the red light. Deputy Dennison, along with the Whitfield County Fire Department, arrived on the scene at the same time. Deputy Dennison observed that the driver, who was later identified as Christopher Lee Babcock, 35, of Rock Spring, was in the driver’s seat, slumped over the steering wheel. A bystander had already put the vehicle in park. Deputy Dennison also noticed that a small, terrified child was in the back seat. The fire department removed Babcock from the vehicle, he was not breathing, and it was an overdose. Deputy Dennison obtained his county-issued Narcan out of his vehicle and gave it to the fire department. Babcock was not breathing for several minutes. EMS advised Deputy Dennison that they administered several more Narcans, which revived Babcock. Deputy Dennison observed that Babcock had damage to the passenger side of his vehicle. Part of the front passenger side bumper was missing, and there was damage to the undercarriage of the vehicle. There was also a black streak down the passenger side of the vehicle. Deputy Fincher had responded to a hit-and-run crash at 741 Houston Valley Road only a few minutes prior to this incident. The debris that was in the yard where the mailbox was hit matched Babcock’s vehicle. DFCS responded to the scene and created a safety plan for the child. Deputy Dennison read Babcock his implied consent notice at Hamilton Medical Center, and he refused. Due to the circumstances, Deputy Dennison obtained a search warrant for Babcock’s blood. Babcock was booked into the Whitfield County Jail, charged with DUI drugs, failure to maintain lane, hit and run, improper stopping on roadway, and endangering child under 14 with DUI. According to Whitfield County arrest records, Babcock has history of DUI arrests.
