Dalton man arrested for DUI after running red light on the North Bypass

According to a Dalton Police Department report, On March 6th, 2023, at 5:17 PM, Officer Allen stopped a vehicle that ran a red light on North Bypass and Underwood Street. Officer Allen then made contact with the driver, Riley Brannon Reece, 20, of Dalton. Officer Allen reported, “[I] advised him for the reason of the stop. He stated that he knew he had run the red light. While speaking with Riley, [I] could smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. [I] collected his information and returned to my vehicle to call for another unit. As [I] was walking back to my car, [I] noticed several 24-ounce white claws in the rear seat directly behind Riley. Officer McDaniel arrived shortly after. [I] asked him how much he had to drink. He stated that he had half of a white claw. [I] asked him if the cans in the back were his, and he stated they were not. He stated that the can he was drinking was in the front passenger floorboard. He stated that half of the can be spilled out while he was driving. [I] had Riley exit the vehicle, and he asked if he could call his mom before going to jail. [I] informed him that at this time, he was not under arrest.” During field sobriety testing, Riley showed several signs of impairment and refused to provide a breath sample. Riley was then placed under arrest for DUI and refused the state test. The officer then allowed Riley to call his mother and grandmother. His mother did not answer, but his grandmother did. He advised her that he was going to jail because he had been caught drinking and driving again. Riley was booked into the Whitfield County Jail, charged with traffic signal violation, open container, underage consumption, DUI less safe under 21.
