Cartersville man found asleep inside stolen truck after call for welfare check at hotel in Dalton

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On July 5th, 2023, at 8:31 AM, Officer Wingate responded to the Whitfield Extended Stay located at 2220 Chattanooga Road in reference to a welfare check on a male asleep inside a black 1993 GMC truck. Officer Wingate reported, “[I] located the vehicle and male subject, Paul Allan Cheney, 36, of Cartersville, asleep in the driver seat, window rolled down, keys in the ignition, and the vehicle was not running. [I] woke Paul, who advised he was ok and in no need of medical assistance. While speaking to Paul, he stated he and his girlfriend, Shamair Dixson, arrived here today to get a room, and he fell asleep. While [I] spoke to Paul, Officer Bethune ran the vehicle license plate information. Dispatch advised the vehicle was reported stolen.” Paul was then placed under arrest and advised he had taken the truck from Ringgold on July 3rd, 2023. Dixson was nowhere to be located while officers were on the scene. Paul was booked into the Whitfield County Jail, charged with theft by receiving stolen property and entering automobile with intent to commit theft or felony.
