Athens man arrested after attempting to rob another man with knife on Shugart Road in Dalton

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On April 28th, 2023, at 3:42 AM, Officer Dykes and Officer Herrera responded to the area of 835 Shugart Road (Khols) in reference to a disturbance in progress. Whitfield 911 dispatch advised the 911 caller stated that a white male wearing a black shirt, black shorts, and a hat with glasses chased him with a knife attempting to mug him. The 911 caller stated that he was relocating back to the Cliff Apartments across the street from where the incident occurred. The 911 caller also stated that the male was last seen in the area where the incident occurred. The victim stated to officers that he was walking his dog in the field next to Khols when he observed the suspect walking toward him. He stated that the suspect began telling him a story about how he did not have any money and that he was riding with two other people before they left, leaving him stranded in Dalton. The victim then stated that the suspect asked him for money, and he advised him that he did not have any money to give him. The victim then stated that the suspect pulled out a knife and charged at him, telling the victim to give him whatever he had on him. The victim stated that he believed that the suspect was going to stab him, and the only reason he was not harmed on this day was due to his dog (German Shepherd) barking and protecting him. Officer Dykes located the suspect sitting behind Walmart located at 815 Shugart Road. The suspect was identified as Simon James Willmon, 52, of Athens. Officer Herrera recognized Simon from a case earlier in the shift where he gave the same story about being left behind in Dalton while traveling with two other subjects. Simon stated that the dog became aggressive and attempted to attack him. Simon stated that he “Stood his ground”. Simon was transported to the Whitfield County Jail and charged with aggravated assault and simple battery.
