Altanta man arrested for DUI after driving all over I-75 and running vehicles off the roadway

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On November 22nd, 2022, at 4:31 PM, Whitfield County Dispatch received several calls from different callers reporting that a Penske truck was driving all over the roadways on I-75 southbound near the 330-mile marker. The callers advised that the driver of the Penske truck was running people off the roadways. Whitfield County Dispatch then gave out a be on the lookout (BOLO). According to the report, “Deputy Hammontree observed the vehicle failed maintains its lane. Deputy Hammontree then activated his blue lights and sirens. The vehicle did not pull over until I-75 southbound at the 326 exit ramp. Deputy Sharpe arrived as Deputy Hammontree was getting out of his patrol vehicle. Deputy Hammontree spoke to the driver Curtiss Lee Wheeler, 58, of Atlanta, and explained the reason for the traffic stop.” Deputy Sharpe could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath. Deputy Sharpe also noticed Wheeler’s eyes were bloodshot. Wheeler advised he only had one beer before driving. During field sobriety testing, Wheeler showed several signs of impairment and showed a positive result from alcohol on a PBT. Wheeler was placed under arrest for DUI and refused the state test. According to the report, “Deputy Sharpe searched the vehicle and located two 32oz Miller Highlife. Both still had liquid in them, but there was beer all over the bench seat.” Wheeler was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with driving on roadways laned for traffic, DUI driving under the influence of alcohol less safe, open container, and driving while revoked.
