Trion teen succumbs from injuries sustained in August head-on crash that killed two others in Walker County

According to family, Cameron Eli Lyons, 19, of Trion, who was involved in a head-on crash on August 31st, 2023, on Hwy 27 in Walker County succumbed to his injuries this week at area hospital.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety Public Information Office, “On Thursday, August 31st, 2023, at 9:12 AM, Post 41 LaFayette Troopers were dispatched to a two-vehicle head-on crash on State Route 1 (Hwy 27) near Fields Drive. A 2012 GMC Terrain driven by Jerry “Poobie” Glenn Payne, 65, of Trion, was traveling southbound. A 2015 Cadillac SRX driven by Tonya-Joan Marie Overbay, 41, of Summerville, was traveling northbound. For unknown reasons, Payne crossed all lanes into the northbound lanes and struck the Cadillac in the front. Mr. Payne was pronounced deceased on scene. Ms. Overbay was transported to Erlanger Hospital via EMS with serious injuries. The Walker County Coroner called and advised she had succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. A passenger in the GMC, Cameron Eli Lyons, 19, of Trion, was transported to Erlanger via EMS and is currently in critical condition with life threatening injuries. Families of all parties involved have been notified.”
