Tennessee man arrested for DUI after 100 mph pursuit with GSP trooper on I-75 in Gordon County

According to a Georgia State Patrol incident report, On May 6th, 2023, at approximately 3:10 AM, while performing speed enforcement on 1-75 South near mile marker 318 in Gordon County, Trooper Weaver observed a 2019 Chevy Cruze speeding at 91 MPH. Trooper Weaver reported, “[I] activated my emergency equipment to perform a traffic stop on this vehicle for the observed violation. As [I] approached the rear of the black Chevrolet Cruze, the driver initially yielded by pulling to the right shoulder and slowing. The driver then proceeded to accelerate and reenter I-75 South, initiating a pursuit. [I] notified Troop A Communications that [I] was in pursuit. The driver traveled south on I-75 at speeds in excess of 100 MPH. The driver failed to maintain his lane multiple times, began changing lanes, driving recklessly, and driving with total disregard for the safety of the motoring public. As we approached mile marker 315 on I-75, [I] attempted to position my patrol vehicle to perform a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT). The driver then slammed on his brakes in a reckless and aggressive manner while in the left lane in an attempt to prevent the PIT. The pursuit continued south, where [I] attempted to position my patrol vehicle again for a PIT, and the driver again aggressively slammed on the brakes to avoid it. Near mile marker 314, an attempt to PIT was made; however, after contact was made, due to traffic in the middle lane, the PIT was not successfully completed. At this time, Trooper Shaw became the secondary unit and took over radio traffic. As we passed the traffic in the middle lane, the driver began driving on the left emergency lane, where a second PIT was performed. The driver was able to regain control of the vehicle as he traveled across all three southbound lanes and onto the right shoulder.” At this time, all the windows quickly rolled down, and all occupants began to show their hands out the window. The driver stopped to avoid being PIT again and was taken at gunpoint by the troopers. The driver, identified as Kevin Daniel Colon-Santiago, 21, of Murfreesboro, TN, was taken into custody. While speaking with Colon-Santiago, Trooper Weaver observed the strong odor of marijuana coming from his person as well as the odor of an alcoholic beverage. The trooper also observed that Colon-Santiago’s eyes were extremely bloodshot and watery, and he spoke in a slow, slurred manner. Colon-Santiago was read Georgia Implied Consent Notice for Suspects Age 21 or Over and agreed to the test. Mr. Colon-Santiago agreed. Troopers did locate an open container of margarita and an open Modelo beer in the passenger area of the vehicle. Colon-Santiago was also found to have a suspended driver’s license. Colon-Santiago was then transported to the Gordon County Jail, charged with speeding, reckless driving, DUI, felony fleeing, improper lane change, aggressive driving, failing to maintain a single lane, seatbelt, improper stopping, failing to signal while changing lane, open container violation, driving in the emergency lane, failure to yield to emergency vehicle, driver to use due care while driving, and other various traffic charges.
