Rome man arrested for DUI after striking two mailboxes on Hwy 27 in Floyd County

According to a Floyd County Police Department incident report, On December 13th, 2022, at 1:42 AM, Officer Overstreet was on patrol in the area of GA-1 near Hawkins Road when he noticed two vehicles stopped on the right side shoulder with their flashers on. Officer Overstreet reported, “[I] stopped out to see if they needed any assistance and first made contact with Ms. Harris. She advised that her nephew had a flat tire and didn’t have a spare tire to change it with. As [I] spoke to her, [I] noticed that a large piece of wood had been unearthed and appeared to be a post for a mailbox. [I] was advised by Ms. Harris that her nephew was calling for a tow truck and that it would be here shortly. As [I] went to observe the flat tire, [I] noticed that the wheel was bent and that the passenger side windshield had been busted. [I] noticed about 10 yards away two mangled mailboxes on the ground. Both mailboxes appeared to have been struck by the vehicle. As [I] conducted a plain view search of the vehicle, [I] noticed an open grinding device, most commonly used to ground up marijuana, and a can of an alcoholic beverage in the passenger side floorboard. While at the vehicle, [I] could smell the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. [I] walked back and asked the driver for his ID and asked how he hit the mailbox. He stated that his tire went flat, and he ran off the road, striking the mailbox. [I] was able to identify the driver as Jaylin Deondre Boatner, 23, of Rome.” As the officer spoke to Jaylin, he noticed the strong odor of alcohol being emitted from his breath. Harris advised that he had been going to see his mother in Summerville and that, lately, he has been kinda down on his luck. She stated that he lost his father a little while ago and that he has been mostly living out of his car. Jaylin advised he only had one beer before driving. During field sobriety testing, Jaylin showed several signs of impairment and was placed under arrest for DUI. Jaylin was transported to the Floyd County Jail and charged with DUI and failure to maintain the lane.
