Wanted Silver Creek man arrested after 100 mph chase in Floyd County

According to a Floyd County Police Department incident report, on September 1st, 2020, at around 8:16 PM, Officer Wright was patrolling the area of Old Dalton Road when he noticed a truck traveling south at a high rate of speed. Officer Wright activated his radar unit, and it displayed 65 mph in a 45 mph zone. Officer Wright activated his emergency equipment and proceeded to catch up to the vehicle. After a few seconds, it was apparent that the vehicle was fleeing. Officer Wright caught up to the truck as it was turning onto Cordle Drive. The suspect, later identified as Herbert Sebastian Shiflett, 30 of Silver Creek turned South onto Highway 27 and continued to flee. Officer Wright reported, "As [I] approached the Armuchee Connector, [I] advised dispatch that [I] was in pursuit. As the pursuit passed through the intersection of 27 and Old Summerville Road, Shiflett crossed into the oncoming lane of travel. Shiflett reached speeds over 100 mph as he continued southbound toward Rome. Several marked patrol units were blocking the intersections for safety as the pursuit passed Berry College and began to approach the intersection at Redmond Circle. As the pursuit approached the intersection, traffic became quite heavy. Shiflett entered the right turn lane and came to a stop due to vehicles in front of him. Officer Lanier maneuver his patrol vehicle through traffic in an attempt to block Shiflett from moving any further. At this time, the suspect began to accelerate toward a civilian's vehicle. Officer Lanier reported, "Due to the suspect's disregard for the safety of others on the road thus far, [I] felt the need to end the pursuit in order to keep anyone from being injured or killed." Officer Lanier reported, "As the suspect vehicle began to move, [I] used the push bumper of my patrol vehicle in an attempt to push him away from other vehicles and end the pursuit." Officer Wright stated, "Officer Lanier then accelerated and struck the suspect vehicle, causing it to spin counter-clockwise and come to a stop." The officers exited their patrol vehicle and approached the suspect Shiflett with their duty weapons drawn. Shiflett was pulled from the vehicle and placed in handcuffs. The officer's front bumper was damaged while ending the pursuit to protect the public. According to the report, the pursuit was captured on both dash and body cams. Shiflett was charged with speeding, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of roadway, improper tail lights, attempting to elude, and felony a warrant.
