Special Agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have arrested and charged a Bell Buckle man accused of driving his vehicle toward law enforcement officers attempting to arrest him following a pursuit last night.
At the request of 12th District Attorney General J. Michael Taylor, TBI Agents began investigating an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night in Marion County, involving deputies from the Dade County (GA) Sheriff’s Department.
At the time of this release, preliminary information indicated that, earlier Tuesday evening, deputies in Dade County attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle being driven by Grandall Massengale (DOB 2-9-95). Massengale reportedly refused to stop and a pursuit ensued, which continued into neighboring Marion County, Tennessee, where the driver crashed the vehicle in a wooded area on Highway 134. While Dade County deputies attempted to take Massengale into custody, he reportedly continued to attempt to elude officers and drove in their direction. Deputies subsequently fired upon the vehicle, striking Massengale, who was struck, injured and hospitalized.
Following his discharge today, Agents arrested Massengale, charged him with two counts of Aggravated Assault, and subsequently booked him into the Marion County Jail, where, at the time of this release, he was being held on $25,000 bond.
On November 5th, at approximately 8:50pm, Dade County K9 Deputy Kevin Haswell observed a suspicious vehicle in the Wildwood area. As Deputy Haswell attempted to catch up to the vehicle, he observed the vehicle turn off all it's lights, and then begin traveling in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed. Deputy Haswell attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the vehicle refused to stop. The pursuit of the vehicle started in Dade County, went in to Lookout Valley, TN, and then back in to Dade County. When the pursuit continued back in to Marion County, TN, Deputy Haswell's vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree line, disabling his vehicle and ending his involvement in the pursuit. The vehicle being pursued was found to be stolen. Two additional Deputies continued the pursuit, eventually ending at Parker Lane and Highway 134 in Marion County. The pursuit ended with an officer involved shooting, and is currently being investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. According to the TBI while Dade County deputies attempted to take suspect Grandall Massengale, 24 of Bell Buckle into custody, he reportedly continued to attempt to elude officers and drove in their direction. Deputies subsequently fired upon the vehicle, striking Massengale, who was struck, injured, and hospitalized. A female passenger in the vehicle was unharmed. No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident." K9 Deputy Haswell was transported to the hospital for injuries sustained during the vehicle accident, and was released earlier this morning. His K9 partner (Kaiser) was not injured in the accident. Any additional details about the officer involved shooting, will be released when it's available, as the investigation is early and ongoing. The Dade County Deputies involved in the shooting, have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard with officer involved shootings.
