TN trucker booked into the Whitfield County Jail after carjacking Uber driver earlier this month

Updated: May 23

According to the Cohutta Police Department and Whitfield County Sheriff's Office Carolina Vargas, 26 of Antioch, TN, who has worked as an Uber driver in Tennessee, barely survived an assault from an Uber client earlier this month. Vargas was driving her black 2011 Ford Explorer. She was found by a Good Samaritan on the side of the road, injured, dazed, bleeding profusely, and missing three teeth – but alive after having saved herself by jumping out of her moving car. On May 8th, the suspect, a man identified as Christopher Chadwick Miller, 51 of Cleveland, Tennessee, again hired Vargas to take him back to where his truck had been repaired and was awaiting its owner. This trip would take a turn for the worse. Halfway through the trip, Miller told Vargas that he knew of a shortcut back to Nashville, which would save her time and gas. When Vargas protested, Miller shoved her hard in her ribs and revealed he had a knife placing the knife against her rib cage. According to the report, Miller told her, “Now you are going to do exactly as I say.” Vargas begged Miller to let her go. It soon became apparent that Miller had no intention of releasing her or her car, and was, in fact, enjoying dominating the young woman. In a desperate maneuver, Vargas unclipped her cell phone and threw herself out of the speeding (55MPH) vehicle. “I took my seatbelt off and grabbed my phone and in that second, that’s when I opened the door and jumped,” stated Vargas. “I just remember feeling a ball of fire where the tire drove over me.” She was found shortly after crumpled by the side of Cleveland Highway, bruised, bloody, and missing teeth. She was taken to Hamilton Medical Center by EMS with life-threatening injuries. Police and detectives were able to identify Vargas assailant by a photo of Miller, which she had taken on her cell phone, and the copy of his driver’s license taken at the hotel where he stayed. The stolen Ford Explorer was found in Cleveland, TN, according to Police Chief Fowler. Shortly before 5:30 p.m., According to investigators, Miller kept driving south, and on Monday, May 11th, they got a ping on his cellphone that led them to where he was in Northeast Florida. Shortly before 5:30 p.m., Duval County deputies and Jacksonville Police Department officers took Miller into custody in Jacksonville. Authorities said Miller was in possession of firearms when they arrested him. Miller was booked into the Duval County jail on a fugitive warrant. On Wednesday, Miller was booked into the Whitfield County Jail charged by the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office with felony theft of an automobile, kidnapping, and aggravated assault. Miller is being held without bond.
