Marietta man arrested after leaving the scene of fatal crash on I-75 in Whitfield Co. Friday morning
According to a Whitfield County 911 CAD at 4:01 AM on Friday, June 26th, 2020, Whitfield County 911 received a call regarding a vehicle crash with injuries on I-75 northbound near mile marker 340. A Whitfield County deputy arrived on the scene and advised there was a severe injury. According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report, a 2014 Chevy Express Van being driven by Mitchell Dion Morgan, 56 of Marietta, GA, was traveling northbound on I-75 in the left lane. A 2016 GMC Terrain being driven by Miriam Ballesteros, 35 of Rockford, Illinois, was traveling in the middle lane. Morgan made a sudden lane change to the middle lane and struck the rear of the GMC with its front. After impact, the van rotated counter-clockwise into the left lane. Morgan overcorrected to the right and rotated clockwise in the middle lane, then back into the left lane. The van came to an uncontrolled rest facing east in the left lane. The GMC after impact was rotated counter-clockwise into the left lane. Ballesteros overcorrected to the right causing the GMC to rotate clockwise back into the middle lane. The GMC came to a control rest facing north in the left lane. The area of impact was in the middle lane. Life Force was called to the scene and landed on I-75. A passenger in the GMC, Cornelio 65 of Des Plaines, MI, was airlifted from the scene. After the crash, Morgan left the scene walking down the interstate. Morgan was arrested later that afternoon by GSP SCRT after being spotted on the side of I-75 near exit 328. Morgan booked into the Whitfield County Jail on charges of involuntary manslaughter (felony), serious injury by vehicle, hit and run resulting in serious injury or death reckless conduct, reckless driving, and following too closely.
