Cedartown woman arrested for DUI following fatal crash on I-75 in Bartow County
According to the Georgia State Patrol On Nov. 18 at approximately 11:55 p.m., a 2013 Chevrolet Impala was stopped in the right lane of I-75 northbound. The driver was under the influence of alcohol and was improperly stopped in the roadway. A tractor-trailer was in the right lane and attempted to swerve to the left to avoid the Impala. The truck struck the left side of the Impala with its right side. The truck then left the east side of the roadway, and struck a 2000 Honda Accord. It was parked in the east side emergency lane. The truck then pushed the Accord into a guardrail, went through the guardrail, and then came to an uncontrolled final rest in the right lane facing westbound. The semi truck came to a final rest on top of the Impala. The passenger of Impala was deceased at the scene; the driver of that car currently is at Kennestone Hospital in very critical condition. Driver of Impala a Evelyn Nowell, 73 of Cedartown, was also injured and transported to Cartersville Medical Center. She was released shortly aftercharged with Driving under the Influence, homicide by vehicle (first degree), and Improper slowing or stopping on roadway. The driver of semi Brian Walker, age 32 of Jonesboro Georgia was not injured. Driver of Accord – Robert Whitman, age 49 of Emerson, was injured and transported to Kennestone Hospital. Passenger of the Accord, Bobbie Whitman, age 56 of Emerson, was fatally injured. This is an ongoing Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) investigation.
Georgia State patrol is currently investigating a fatal crash involving a tractor-trailer I-75 northbound near mile marker 278 in Bartow. The crash happened shortly after 12:00 A.M. Monday morning. Interstate 75 is completely shutdown. We will have further information on this crash once it is released.
