GBI called to investigate Floyd County officer-involved shooting Thursday morning
Floyd County, GA (May 23, 2019) – On Thursday, May 23, 2019, the GBI was requested by the Floyd County Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting on Kingston Highway, Rome, Floyd County, GA. Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 6:20 AM, the Metro Drug Task Force and SWAT team were executing a warrant for drugs & weapons at 1933 Kingston Highway. The subject, identified as Michael Lee Spears, age 44, had the residence barricaded. Once officers made entry, Spears fired upon officers. Officers returned fire, striking Spears. Members of the SWAT team were able to render first aid until EMS arrived. Spears was transported to Floyd Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries. No officers were injured in this incident. The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be provided to the Floyd County District Attorney’s Office for review.
The Floyd County Police Department has contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to assist with investigation of an officer involved shooting on Kingston Highway (Ga 293). The Metro Drug Taskforce and SWAT team were serving a warrant at 1933 Kingston Highway when they were met by gunfire on Thursday at 630 a.m. Police returned fire and one person was shot. The injuries to the male were not life threatening and members of the SWAT team rendered first aid and were able to stabilize him prior to EMS arrival. The officer involved in the incident is a Floyd County officer assigned to the SWAT team. The FCPD will defer all other questions to GBI pending their investigation.
