Distracted driving blamed on tractor-tailer crash which blocked I-75 in Whitfield County last month
According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report on Tuesday, June 18th, around 2:30 P.M. a Freightliner TT 2016 being driven by Leroy Gowens 75 of a Miami Oklahoma address was traveling north on I-75 in the right lane. According to GSP Gowens failed to maintain his lane of travel and ran off the right side of the roadway. Gowens then attempted to bring the Freightliner back onto I-75 but was unsuccessful. The Freightliner overturned onto its right side and blocked all three lanes of I-75 northbound for a very extended period of time. Gowens told the investigating Trooper that he ran off the roadway because he was attempting to use his GPS system and didn't realize he ran off of the roadway until he was in the grass. Gowens was injured in the crash and transported by EMS to Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton. Gowens was issued two citations for failure to maintain lane and distracted driving. I-75 was shutdown for several hours and stranded motorist while crews worked to clear the scene.
