Dalton woman arrested for shoplifting after stealing from Walmart

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff's Office incident report, on Thursday, July 23rd, 2020, at about 9:00 p.m., a deputy responded to the business of Walmart, 2545 East Walnut Avenue, regarding a shoplifting. At the location the deputy met with Walmart's Asset Protection Associate and the apprehended suspected shoplifter. The suspected shoplifter was identified with her Georgia driver license card as Valerie Renee Wheeler, 36 of Dalton. The Asset Protection Associate advised that he observed Valerie Wheeler at a self-checkout register and in the process of scanning merchandise, she would place items on top of one another so that only one of the merchandise was actually being scanned. Wheeler would then place the items into a bag and then in her shopping cart. Wheeler did this process for several other items before making her purchase for the actual scanned merchandise. After making her purchase, she then exited the store without paying for the unscanned merchandise. The Asset Protection Associate apprehended Wheeler and detained her waiting for the authorities. The Asset Protection Associate did have surveillance video footage of Wheeler skipping the scan of merchandise and showed it to the deputy. The merchandise that was not purchased was collected and returned to Walmart; those merchandise amounted to $85.02. With the set of facts and circumstance, the deputy reasonably believed that the violation of theft by shoplifting was committed by Valerie Renee Wheeler, therefore she was arrested. Wheeler was transported to the Whitfield County Jail charged with theft by shoplifting.
