Dalton man facing several charges including DUI after head-on crash on Walnut Avenue last week

According to a Dalton Police Department crash report, on Tuesday, May 19th, 2020, at around 1:53 a 2009 Toyota Highlander Sport driven by Elisa Cervantes, 34 of Dalton was westbound in the inside lane on West Walnut Avenue. A 2015 Honda Accord Sport driven by Marc Castillo, 21 of Dalton was eastbound in the inside lane on West Walnut Avenue. Cervantes stated she was in the inside westbound lane on West Walnut Avenue when she saw the Honda coming eastbound. Cervantes stated the Honda was traveling at a high rate of speed. Cervantes stated the Honda crossed into her lane of travel head-on. Cervantes stated she tried to avoid the crash by entering the center turn lane but was not successful. The Toyota was struck in the front end on the passenger side. Castillo stated he was westbound on West Walnut Avenue and was feeling sleepy. Castillo stated the last thing he remembered was that he was at West Walnut Avenue at Thornton Avenue. Castillo stated he dozed off and woke up in oncoming traffic. According to the investigating officer, the odor of burnt marijuana was detected in the Honda. A search warrant executed during the investigation revealed suspected marijuana and an open empty container of alcohol. Castillo advised he smoked marijuana within the last 24 hours, approximately 18 hours prior to the crash. Castillo's eyes were very red along the edges, which lead the investigating officer to believe he had consumed some intoxicants more recently than 18 hours prior. The evidence on the scene did not support that both vehicles were traveling in the same direction. The evidence showed the vehicles were, in fact, traveling toward each other, resulting in a head-on collision. Per witnesses both tuckers, The Honda was eastbound at a high rate of speed. All witnesses advised the Honda crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with Toyota. Both drivers were injured and transported by EMS to Hamilton Medical Center. Castillo's injuries were listed as being suspected serious. Castillo is being charged with DUI, open container violation, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, driving too fast for conditions, failure to maintain lane/driving on the wrong side of the road, and unlawful use of central lane.
