Dalton man charged with DUI after being found passed out at the wheel while sitting at red light

According to a Dalton Police report, on Sunday, March 1st, at around 3:00 AM, an officer was dispatched to a report of a driver asleep at the wheel of a vehicle at Waugh Street and Shugart Road. Once on scene, the officer found a black Chrysler 300 stopped on Waugh Street, preparing to make a left turn onto Shugart Road. The officer observed the vehicle not move as the light changed from red to green and back to red. When the officer approached the driver window, he observed the driver, later identified as Edwin Echevarria Medina, 56 of Dalton, asleep at the wheel. After knocking on the window for a while, Medina finally woke up. The officer said he remembered seeing Medina at a local bar earlier in the night. The officer advised Medina did not speak English well but did advise he had one drink. An officer attempted to give the HGN field sobriety test to Medina, but he refused to perform the test. The officer stated that he smelled alcohol while attempting to perform HGN. Medina was not able to stand without losing balance. Medina refused to attempt the one-leg stand field sobriety test. Medina refused to blow in the Alcolizer. Medina was leaning against his vehicle for most of the traffic stop, and his eyes were very red or "Bloodshot". Medina refused Georgia Implied consent Notice. Medina was arrested and transported to Whitfield County Jail, charged with DUI less safe, and impeding traffic flow.
