Dalton man arrested for DUI after plowing through West Hill Cemetery Friday morning

Updated: May 4, 2019

The Dalton Police Department arrested a man early Friday morning on a DUI charge after he left the roadway and damaged or destroyed a number of graves in the West Hill Cemetery. The damaged graves were located near Emery Street.

The incident happened at approximately 2:00 am. A black 1990 Chevy GMT 400 pickup truck driven by 41 year old Cliff Erick Sneed of Dalton was traveling eastbound on Emery Street near the Georgian Apartments when it failed to navigate a curve and left the roadway, entering the cemetery and running over approximately a dozen graves and causing heavy damage.  Dalton officers responded to the scene and made contact with Mr. Sneed and asked him to perform several field sobriety tests. Sneed was arrested and charged with DUI (less safe driver) and failure to maintain lane.

Dalton officers are working this morning with the Public Works Department to determine the exact number of graves that were damaged or destroyed in the crash and also to compile a list of the grave plot owners/next of kin to make contact and inform them of the damage.
