Calhoun pair arrested on felony charges after motorcycle pursuit in Gordon County
According to a Gordon County Sheriff's Office incident report, on Tuesday, August 4th, 2020, at approximately 3:21 AM Deputy Stevens with the Gordon County Sheriff's Office Uniformed Patrol Division attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Union Grove Church Road at Francis Court on a black sportbike with no tag lights. The sportbike was driven by Tyler Scott Branum. The sportbike turned onto Francis Court and continued driving. Francis Court transitioned into Charmin Circle around a left-hand curve where Branum accelerated quickly in an attempt to evade Deputy Stevens. Deputy Stevens' emergency equipment was activated while Branum continued on Charmin Circle and turned left on Pioneer Drive still at a high rate of speed Branum then turned right onto Union Grove Church Road and continued at a high rate of speed attempting to evade Deputy Stevens. Deputy Stevens was providing the description of the motorcycle and driver to dispatch when he noticed there was a passenger on the back of the bike. Sergeant Garcia advised Deputy Stevens to cancel the pursuit. Branum then turned onto West Road, where it appeared Branum tried to ditch the bike and run. Branum started to run and fell to the pavement where he surrendered. The female passenger identified as Kelly Ann Smith ran into the woods adjacent to West Road. Barnum was detained, and responding deputies were able to locate and apprehend Kelly. Branum was transported to the Gordon County Jail, where his motorcycle helmet was disassembled, and two syringes were found along with a small bag of a white crystalline substance consistent with methamphetamine. Branum was arrested and charged for fleeing attempting to elude, obstruction, possession of methamphetamine, and crossing the guard line with a controlled substance. Kelly was arrested for an outstanding felony probation warrant and charged with misdemeanor obstruction. This event was captured on Deputy Stevens' body-worn camera.
