Man arrested for DUI after being stopped for tag violation in Walker County

According to a Walker County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On September 30th, 2023, at approximately 11:32 PM, while sitting stationary at South 27 Church, Deputy Jacobs observed a 2012 Honda Civic with no visible registration traveling northbound on Hwy 27 with no operating taillights. Deputy Jacobs reported, “[I] approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and made contact with the driver, Mark Anthony West, 46, who stated, “I just drove this car, so I’d get stopped and go to jail tonight.” [I] then began to ask why he would go to jail, and the suspect interrupted me stating, “I’ve been drinking, [I] have an open container right here, and [I] don’t have any insurance on the car.” The deputy also observed West’s eyes, and they were watery and bloodshot. Deputy Haven responded to the scene to assist with performing field sobriety. The Honda returned through NCIC with an expired registration out of Texas. Deputy Jacobs did observe a Bud Ice in a brown paper bag still cold to the touch in the center cup holder of the vehicle. During field sobriety tests, Deputy Haven observed enough indicators that West was under the influence of alcohol. West was placed under arrest and refused the state-administered test of his blood. West was then transported to the Walker County Jail and booked, charged with DUI, open container violation, no insurance, and failure to register vehicle.
