Dalton woman arrested for DUI after crashing into tree in off-duty Whitfield County officer’s yard

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On February 3rd, 2023 at 2:32 PM, Deputies Haven, Spivey, and Winkler were dispatched to an address on Muse Road in response to a possible burglary in progress. As dispatch acquired more information, the burglary in progress was changed to a vehicle crash. The female caller, (an off-duty Whitfield County Jailer) and her brother (an off-duty firefighter) were out with a female they had seen running from their yard after crashing her truck into a tree in their yard. The driver later identified as Desteny Wissiup Palmerin, 21, of Dalton, stated that she had admitted to them to drinking vodka. The caller also advised that they had Desteny sitting down due to being unable to walk or stand properly, they believed her to be extremely drunk. The female said she was sleeping and woke to “banging” at her front door. She was joined by her brother shortly after and they spotted the totaled 2014 GMC truck in the yard. The brother who is a firefighter checked Desteny and found no apparent injuries. She also refused EMS. Desteny advised it was her dad’s truck. According to the report, “Deputies asked her if she had had anything to drink today and Desteny said that she had had 1 or 2 shots of Jack Daniels. When asked what time she had taken the shots, Desteny asked for the time (Deputies replied it was 3 p.m.) and said 4 p.m. Desteny then became confused, saying that she had not taken any shots.” Desteny then stated “I had to much, I can for sure that” and then contradicted this statement by stating “no, I don`t think so, I don’t think I had too much, I can assure that” when Deputy Haven inquisited on how much was to much. Deputy Haven asked if she had hit her head or anything when she crashed and Desteny said that she had not and that she was perfectly fine. During field sobriety testing, Desteny showed several signs of being highly impaired. Deputies Spivey and Winkler found one empty Jack Daniels Honey Bottle in the driver seat’s floor board, near the pedals along with a phone that was beside it. They also found one empty bottle of 1800 Tequila. Desteny was then transported to Whitfield County Jail, where she urinated on herself; she advised she was sorry and tried her best to hold it but was not able to. After getting her inside the building/booking area, jail personal had her blow into a breathalyzer so they could estimate about how long she would need to stay till she was sober enough to leave. She blew a .236, which is almost 3x the legal limit of 0.08. Desteny was charged with DUI driving under the influence of alcohol, open container, and failure to maintain lane.
