According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On February 18th, 2023, Officer Walker responded to 304 North Thornton Ave (Mapco) in reference to a shoplifting that occurred on the previous date. The owner provided video footage of the theft. The suspect(s) arrived at the store at approximately 5:30 PM in a dark-colored Chrysler 200. The vehicle is parked almost directly in front of the store’s front doors. According to the report, “A heavier-set black male exited the driver seat. He is wearing a black graphic-style t-shirt with purple writing, a gray hooded zip-up jacket, black pants, black shoes, and a black “Beanie” style hat. The passenger exited the vehicle as well. She is a white or Hispanic female wearing a gray jacket (possibly Nike) with long brown hair and glasses. She appeared younger than the driver. Both subjects entered the store. The driver/suspect walks behind the area where the THC/delta 8 products are displayed in a glass case. The suspect then watches the clerk while she serves a customer. While the clerk is working, the suspect opened the glass container and removed approximately 10 “Lipht” delta eight vapes. The suspect is seen concealing the items in her pants pockets and appears to be concealing them in her jacket pocket as well. While she is concealing the items, the passenger is standing in the line of sight of the suspect. She appeared to use her body to block the clerk from observing the suspect. The suspect then looks around the store for a brief time. He then picks up a cigarillo package and waits in line with the passenger. He then pays for the passenger’s item and the cigarillo package. At no point did the suspect attempt to pay for any of the items he concealed while on scene.” The estimated loss of the theft is approximately $330. While typing this report, Officer Walker was able to locate a picture of a male that was arrested in a theft last year named Donavan Bernard Straw, 24, of Dalton. Donavan looked extremely similar to the person involved in the theft. It was reported that Donavan also has a black Chrysler 200. On February 28th, 2023, Straw was arrested and charged with theft by shoplifting.
