According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On April 6th, 2023, at 6:54 PM, Officer Warren was dispatched to 815 Shugart Road Walmart in reference to a male switching tags on items. The loss prevention employee informed officers that he had a male, later identified as Ciante Tyree Chaney, 22, of Chattanooga, in the loss prevention office and that Ciante had been swapping tags on items in the store. The associate stated that Ciante checked out the items through the self-checkout. Ciante stated that he had tried to take a hoodie and switch the tags. Ciante told the officers that he did not leave the store yet and was unsure of why they had him in the loss prevention. Officer Warren reported, “[I] informed him that changing the tags on items while in the store is illegal and that he had also checked out with the items. [I] noticed he had a small black bag strung around his shoulder. After feeling the weight of the bag, [I] asked Ciante if there was a firearm in the bag. He stated that there was. At this time, [I] placed Ciante in handcuffs and informed him he was under arrest for shoplifting.” The associate then showed video footage of Ciante switching the tag off of an unknown item onto a hoodie. He then showed Ciante checking out with the items. Ciante was booked into the Whitfield County Jail and charged with theft by shoplifting.
