Calhoun man arrested for DUI after crashing truck and leaving the scene on foot with dog in Gordon County

According to a Georgia State Patrol incident report, On March 4th, 2023, at 9:21 PM, Sgt. M. Best was dispatched to a single-vehicle crash (white 2002 Ford F-150) on the 1-75 southbound 312 exit ramp to SR 53 in Gordon County. Calhoun Police Department Officer Henson advised that the driver (Eric George Chambers, 42, of Calhoun) left the scene wearing a robe and walking a dog. According to the report, “Officer Henson advised that while he was en-route to the scene, the same suspect walked out in front of him on SR 53, so close that Officer Henson almost struck him and it caused him to honk his horn at the suspect (not knowing that was the suspect at the time). Trooper Best spoke with a witness who actually spoke to Chambers after the crash and prior to him leaving the scene. He advised that Chambers was intoxicated, and he could smell the alcohol when he was talking to him. He said the male appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs, but definitely alcohol. Officer Henson located Chambers on Richardson Road and SR 53 and brought him back to the crash scene. Trooper best reported, “When they arrived at the crash scene, [I] had the witness identify the suspect. He looked at him and confirmed that he was the driver of the Ford F-150. Officer Henson advised me that the suspect was highly intoxicated. [I] opened the door and had the suspect exit the patrol car. The suspect, Chambers, had a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage upon his breath. His eyes were bloodshot and watery, his speech was slightly slurred, he could not keep his balance, and he was very angry and combative. Chambers advised that the reason he crashed was that his dog jumped on him, and it caused him to crash.” Chambers showed a BAC of .133 on the state test at the Gordon County Jail. Chambers was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of crash, failure to maintain a single lane, driving without a license on person, and failure to report crash.
